Alaska 529 scholarships: supporting the dreams of Alaska youth

Alaska 529 is proud to support the education dreams of Alaskans through youth scholarships. Here is a summary of a few that were recently awarded.

In March, we partnered with Alaska Academic Decathlon/Pentathlon to provide more than $40,000 in merit scholarships and Rural Student Scholarships to competitors. 17 middle and high school students won scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,500.

Also in March, we sponsored a Fairbanks Concert Association performance by Canadian singer and songwriter Barbara Lica. As part of the concert, Ms. Lica performed two poems written by Fairbanks students and set to her original music. The two writers, Justine Quiazon and Rorisang Wilkin, were each awarded an Alaska 529 scholarship account of $2,500.

The Arctic Innovation Competition was held in April, and Alaska 529 provided scholarship accounts to competitors in the Cub and Junior divisions. Eight students were awarded scholarships of $2,000 each. In addition, one teacher was selected at random to receive a $2,000 Classroom of the Future award.

In May, we celebrated 529 Day with the first-ever Write It Out! social media contest. Participants were invited to write out 5-2-9 in household objects, take a picture of their masterpiece, post it to social media, and tag Alaska 529 and a friend or family member. Windy Marie Thorn of Cantwell’s Froot Loop 529 photo was selected at random, and she received a $1,529 scholarship account for the youth of her choice.

Alaska 529 believes in the power of education and want to give every child the opportunity to reach their potential. We are proud to support their dreams – and the future of Alaska – with these scholarships.
